Partnership Cycle

How The Partnership Cycle Works:
The CDC Foundation unites private sector partners with CDC scientists to achieve common goals through a continuous cycle. We begin by exploring opportunities together.

  • 1Explore
  • 2Convene
  • 3Facilitate
  • 4Agree
  • 5Implement
  • 6Monitor
  • 7Evaluate

1. Explore - Most CDC Foundation projects begin with an exploratory conversation, originating either with experts at CDC or with representatives of potential funding organizations. CDC Foundation advancement staff help guide the conversation toward areas of mutual interests – where a public health challenge of concern to both parties could be addressed by combining resources and expertise from CDC and the private sector.

2. Convene - If, after exploring potential program ideas, areas of mutual interest are identified, the CDC Foundation convenes expert CDC staff and one or more potential partners for an in-depth discussion about specific program goals, strategies, collaborations, resource needs, etc.

3. Facilitate - The CDC Foundation then facilitates program development by acting as a liaison between CDC and the funding partner in the development of a formal proposal, budget and timeline. The CDC Foundation also manages the associated processes within CDC that are critical to developing a successful and transparent partnership.

4. Agree - Once a proposal is prepared, submitted and accepted, the partnership is formally established through an agreement process. Typically, a letter of agreement, memorandum of agreement or contract is prepared and signed by the funding partner and the CDC Foundation to codify the terms of the grant or relationship.

5. Implement - After the appropriate formal agreements are signed, a CDC Foundation program officer is assigned to the program and works closely with the team at CDC to implement the program. Because of our status as an independent nonprofit organization, we can help CDC quickly and efficiently complete program activities like engaging fellows or subcontractors, purchasing supplies and equipment, coordinating program-related travel or convening experts and stakeholders.

6. Monitor - Throughout the program's timeline, the CDC Foundation program officer works closely with the CDC team to:

  • ensure that the project stays on track and deadlines are met
  • resolve any unexpected challenges
  • manage the budget and track payments and invoices
  • prepare progress reports and share success stories

7. Evaluate - When a program is complete, the CDC Foundation submits a final report to the funding partner(s) outlining the achieved objectives, any unexpected outcomes or lessons learned and opportunities for further research or collaboration.
