Newborn Screening Translation Research Initiative

Newborn Screening Translation Research Initiative

The Newborn Screening Translation Research Initiative (NSTRI) has been established at the CDC Foundation in collaboration with the Newborn Screening Branch in the CDC Division of Laboratory Sciences. The mission of NSTRI is to assure that the translation of research methods into routine laboratory tests for newborn screening leads to sustainable high-quality testing and healthier babies worldwide. This initiative will provide laboratory support and a knowledge base for a wide array of conditions such as lysosomal storage disorders, autism spectrum disorders, immune deficiency disorders, infantile colic, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, asthma, and infectious diseases such as toxoplasmosis.

To fulfill its mission, this initiative will focus on four major areas in newborn screening:

  • Developing new screening methods for specific diseases;
  • Integrating State Public Health Laboratories into the translation process through collaborative field studies;
  • Expanding the global reach of newborn screening;
  • Adapting innovative technologies for screening and quality assurance.

The Foundation is currently seeking partners to support the Newborn Screening Translation Research Initiative in various categories, including financial contributions, equipment and specialized laboratory reagents, fellowships and in-kind contributions and collaborations.
