Fall 2009 Issue
Improving Health Around the World
With approximately 200 programs in over 40 countries, partnerships forged by the CDC Foundation are as diverse as the expansive role of CDC in the global public health arena. While each partnership is unique, all offer CDC greater flexibility, accountability and speed than might otherwise be possible. Consider these examples:
 |
Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use
As one of a number of partners in the initiative, the CDC Foundation is working with experts at CDC and the World Health Organization to implement the Global Adult Tobacco Survey in 14 countries that are home to approximately two-thirds of the world's smokers. To date, the survey has been completed in Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, Thailand and Turkey and will be implemented in the remaining countries during 2009. A new round of countries will be selected in 2010.

Malaria in Pregnancy
The Malaria in Pregnancy Consortium is a global initiative to improve the prevention and treatment of malaria in pregnancy. It is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). The CDC Foundation received a subcontract from LSTM to enable CDC to conduct field research on malaria in pregnancy in Latin America. Malaria in pregnancy is a major cause of severe maternal anemia, preventable low birth weight and infant mortality.

Phones for Health
The CDC Foundation is a key partner in the Phones for Health initiative, a collaboration of public and private partners that is helping developing countries in Africa use wireless technology to improve health. In Tanzania, for example, community health workers are being trained to use wireless phones to collect data about infection rates for HIV, malaria, tuberculosis and diarrheal diseases. An integrated voice recognition system is in development that will record and aggregate the data and transmit it to the central office. Accurate, real time data helps health officials at the national level make decisions about how best to meet health needs in their country.

Flour Fortification Initiative
Cargill works with the CDC Foundation to fight micronutrient deficiency in the developing world by providing funding for the Flour Fortification Initiative (FFI), a coalition of CDC and partners that works to increase the vitamin and mineral content in staple foods to prevent anemia and developmental disabilities. |
