September 2002
A $4.1 million gift from the Avon Foundation enables the CDC Foundation to implement mobile mammography screening programs for underserved women, such as the uninsured or those living in geographically remote areas.
October 2002
Zell and Emily Kravinsky establish two CDC Foundation trusts worth $6.2 million to support CDC’s highest priorities. The larger trust, at $5 million, is the largest gift ever received by the CDC Foundation from individual donors. The Kravinskys’ generous gift leads to substantial news coverage for the CDC Foundation, including stories in People magazine, the Washington Post, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and on CNN.
October 2002
The CDC Foundation’s board of directors adopts a new strategic plan to guide the Foundation for the next three years. The plan is developed through close collaboration between CDC and CDC Foundation leaders and board members – with assistance from leading management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. It will be essential for benchmarking the CDC Foundation’s success in the years ahead.
March 2003
The world-class CDC Marcus Emergency Operations Center opens ahead of schedule to battle health threats like SARS and West Nile virus. One year after The Home Depot co-founder Bernard Marcus pledges $3.9 million to equip an emergency operations center at CDC and calls on corporations for additional support, 15 companies donate or provide discounted equipment through the CDC Foundation.
April 2003
A groundbreaking program funded by Pfizer offers medical students hands-on training at CDC. The program, funded through a $600,000 grant from Pfizer Inc and the Pfizer Foundation, is the first ever to provide medical students with an in-depth learning experience at CDC.
May 2003
A $1 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funds two critical programs to improve maternal and child health care in war-torn Afghanistan: lack of maternal and newborn care, and a short supply of safe drinking water for pregnant women, new mothers and their families.
June 2003
CDC and other federal employees make record contributions to the CDC Foundation through the Combined Federal Campaign in a year when overall contributions to other Combined Federal Campaign organizations declined.
